running Fortran on RH5.2

My first posting - hope this works!

I need to run a simple Fortran routine on my intel-based RH5.2 system. When
issuing the command

f77 (or g77) program_name.f

I get the following message:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot open crtl.o:No such file or directory.

I've installed the relevant compiler and libraries so I don't know what's
going on. I've typed this message into a search engine and this problem
appears quite common; problem is I've not come across a solution. The
routines work just fine on a Unix workstation.

Be grateful for any help.
