The older versions require a lot less from your computer. You can get them from anywhere on the net. The problem is, you will need to do a lot more configuring of your own to get everything to work unless you have only very mainstream components in your system ( eg SB16 ). That is actually one of the major progressions of current Linux distributions - fairly easy graphical installation, automatic hardware detection and such. But with a 486 you don't need all those extra drivers. In the dim past ( the 386 -486 era ) you could install for instance Slackware Linux from floppy disks! Currently, I'm running SuSE Linux 6.2 and I think you will get far with this distribution and any other that will allow you to carefully select the software packages that you wish to install. You have to scrutinize. Even X-Windows is possible, just select a small window manager ( an older one ) and no useless X-servers ( a kind of graphics drivers ). With any luck, the installation will keep track of how much space your selection will require. And along the way, maybe you will still learn something about the ins and outs... greetz, Jeroen.
