es1371 sound help!!!

i was runnig kernel 2.2.12 and had my sound working using the es1371 driver
as sndconfig probed and found..i changed to 2.3.42 and compiled the kernel
with the same configurations but no sound. well when i switched back to
2.2.12 the sound has stoped working..it finds the chip at boot and loads the
module with no probs but there is just no sound anymore..also if it means
anything under windows my sound card is a creative sound blaster audio pci
64D i have tried compiling the kernel with the free oss drives ensonic
soundscape and creative sound blaster useing the same i/o and irq under
linux but to no avail..any help would be greatly appreciated..thanx
