Problems with my monitor ?

I bought on CD-ROM a Corel Linux Standard version with Serial Number
CLSXR-A483374774.
I installed this package on my computer on a separate partition of my first
HD. My computer is is Pentium III 450 Mhz, 128 Mb RAM, one HD of 10Gb and
one of 20Gb, my first HD is divided in two partitions, one 2Gb partion for
W98SE and one of 8 Gb for Linux. My graphical Card is a Diamond Speedstar
A70 and I'm using a LCD TFT 15.1" monitor made by LG. The installation was
no problem at all. I have tried all kinds of installation, all with the
same results. What is the problem: When I select the first option while
starting Linux from the Linux-bootmenu, I see after a short period the menu
where you can choose to login witg the root or with my personal login (In my
case fonsb). The text in other boxes is completely black, in other words, I
can only read the name root. The background is OK, in my case green. When I
select the root, I do reach after a while the desktop. There seems to be no
problem, but when I try to select an option in the menu, the menu appears,
but the text is replaced by black boxes. So also here, I can't read any
text. It's also impossible to change the display settings, because I can't
see what I'm doing. Therefore I tried to reboot the system and restart in
VGA-mode (the second) option, and then there is no problem, except that my
desktop is made of 16-colors, and the menu boxes do not fit on the screen,
but it's working. Accessing the console mode from this options seems
unpossible.
Back in the normal Corel Linux mode (the first option in the bootmenu) I
accessed the console menu, log in as the root account, type XF86Setup, and
then the machine is asking me if I would like to use the default settings
(something like that). There is no difference in choosing yes or no after
giving Enter. The screen is turning into light grey, and there is no text at
all. The message told me before that this could take a while, but I've
waited several times for several hours, so something is wrong. Only with the
combination CRTL-ALT-Backspace I can return, but without results. So there
is no problem in the VGA mode but only in the normal mode, but I'm unable to
change the settings. I hope you can solve my problem.
Best regards, Fons van den Bogaert
