Help! Ethernet Card Configuring problem

I have a D-Link PCI Ethernet card. It came with the source code , and when i
compiled it , it automatically put the .o file (rt18139.o) into the correct
directory /lib/modules/"uname -r'/net. It also put the driver into the
dependent file(modules.dep) into /lib/modules/'uname -r'/modules.dep . I
get no problem inserting the object file(rt18139.o) into the kernel using
"insmod rt18139.o" in any directory and using "modprobe rt18139.o" only in
the net directory above (lib/modules and etc) . The Problem is using
modprobe anywhere else . Everytime i use "modprobe rt18139.o" ,"modprobe
eth0" ( I have "alias eth0 rt18139" in my conf.modules file), "modprobe
rt18139", i get the error " can't find module". i thought that maybe
modprobe path was incorrect, so i would put in the full path "modprobe
/lib/modules/'uname -r'/net/rt18139.o" and i would get the error "not in
dependent file, but it is. So i thought maybe modprobe and depmod were
looking in the wrong place, so in my conf.modules file i put the path and
the dependent file path, and i am still getting the same problems. The
default of modprobe and depmod, are the exact places where my files are. I
have been trying weeks, trying everything possible in figuring out this
problem. I am at the end of my rope. I need modprobe to work correctly to
connect to my universities LAN. Should i not worry about modprobe ( Is
there an alternative). Does anyone have any advice or solutions for this. I
would really appreciate it. Thank You?
