newbie help on .htaccess

I have been trying to incorperate .htaccess to protect one of my
directories. I have created the .passwd file in a seperate directory. When I
attempt to browse the protected area I get the Login and Password box but it
will not authenticate my input. I have checked the AuthUserFile and this
points to the .htpasswd file. The .htaccess file is detailed below

AuthUserFile /home/sites/sitex/web/admin/mail/key/.htpasswd
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthName "Members Area"
AuthType Basic
<LIMIT GET POST>
require valid-user
</LIMIT>
Is there anything wrong with this??
Is there anything missing??

I use the passwd -c command to produce the .htpasswd file so that should be
fine.

Could it be that the system is not set up to use .htaccess, athough the
administrator says that it is?

I have tried numerous combinations of .htaccess and am now pulling my hair
out.

Are there any modules that can be used for password protection and
membership management?

any help is appreciated

Brian
