Re: installing multiple Linux

I have a mult-boot OS machine: Win98, WinNT, Free BSD and Mandrake
Linux. Linux is definitely the black sheep. The installation program
didn't work at all. I think it has problems with large drives and I
know what I am doing. I still have to load the linux kernel from
windows. FreeBSD is light years ahead in my book - very robust
installation program. Since FreeBSD runs many of the world's busiest
web sites (Yahoo, CDROM.com) its stability presumably can't be matched.

Don't confuse yourself with all of the directories:
/usr - most everything except boot time stuff
       on a single user system.
/var - mail, and logs. Stuff that changes daily.
/home - user specific stuff.

I recommend going with one or two mount points: / or / and /usr.

The difference between /usr and /usr/local is not all that important.
It is like /usr is for all of the standard programs that are the same
across all of your machines and /usr/local is for stuff specific to
your machine. OR, if you prefer, /usr contains standard operating
system stuff and /usr/local is more third party applications. You may
also see a /opt that is for third party applications. In a real
company you would have a separate mount point for each of your serious
applications:

/sys_apps/finance
/sys_apps/reporting

Cheers
Sean
