new user display problems

I just installed Red Hat 6.1 for the first time and am having some trouble
with video display...the text console has 1 char. wrapped on the right side
of the screen, and in x windows the resolution is set at 300X200 or
something like that, so most of the display is off the screen.

I tried running the xf86config utility, setting the right display, etc. but
still having trouble.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?
