Problem with X and TurboLinux

I have a P100 with 64MB RAM, Cirrus Logic 5430 graphics card with 2MB RAM.
I recently installed Turbolinux Workstation 4.0 (kernel 2.2.12, XFree86
3.3.5 (I think). In X when I open menus, move windows etc an image of
whatever it is appears at some point on the screen.
I suspect this is a problem with the resolution/virtual desktop size but
nothing seems to resolve it. I use the same settings as I did with RH6.
