IMHO, there IS a steep learning curve for Linux and the news are that
you MAY be always fighting to know about something IF you want to. No
other OS that I know of (at least outside corporate levels) has such a
wide variety of tools for developers, end-users, managers, you name it
-- and, as you may figure out, this leaves you with about two options:
Dig into whatever you need right now and leave the rest for later
learning, or be prepared to read and fight and read and fix and read
and (did I mention that you may need to do some reading?) ...
Now, about your question, I would like to point out two scenarios:
1. Is X86 installed? Have you run XConfigurator and followed the steps?
If not, then please do it. This procedure may solve you a lot of
trouble by defining your video hardware configuration -- Warning:
Please keep your monitor and video card documentation handy while using
this program.
2. Is X86 working OK? Do you find yourself in X-mode after running
'startx'?
If not, then please check the documentation that came with your X86
distribution and try to read first anything related to your video
hardware (like README.<Your VideoChip Here>, as in 'README.S3' or
whatever); unfortunately, there is no generic advice regarding X86
troubleshooting that can be really useful ...
