You have to setup your network card first. So rebuild your kernal for the
brand of card you have. Then once it's recognized on bootup, you need to
install dhclient on your machine so it can configure the addresses into
ifconfig. 

The best docs to read on the subject is network-HOWTO cable-modem-HOWTO and
all the docs that come with dhclient. I think there is a dhcp HOWTO also.
Search around and see for sure.

These docs will tell you everything you need to know about setting up a
cable modem.
