Help!

I am a new user of Linux 6.5 from Mandrake with the Kernel 2.2.13 /KDE:
1.1.2 / Xfree: 3.3.5

There are some questions I have. I am a NT Administrator looking to convert
to Linux and want all information on how to setup on a LAN or a WAN. That is
Question 1. How do you see other computers on the network with out having to
use the ping command? 2. How do you map a drive to a share on the NT40 or
2000 server? 3. How do you connect to the WEB through a NT40 Proxy 2.0
system when it keeps asking for $SOCKS_NS environment variable to point at
the appropriate name server or IP - "NOTE: this is when trying to get mail".
As you can see I need help.

Thank you for your time.
