<filename>.tar.Z is a compressed tar archive. One way of unpacking this is
to use the following :

zcat <filename>.tar.Z | tar xvf -

alternatively you could do it in two steps - but this creates an extra
intermediate file:

uncompress <filename>.tar.Z (which produces <filename>.tar)
tar xvf <filename>.tar

Always transfer files of this kind in binary mode with any ftp program. For
standard command line ftp or MSDOS ftp type bin before begining transfer.

If the file is renamed during transfer just rename it to the original - make
sure the Z is in caps on the UNIX side. On the Windows side WinZip should be
able to open a valid compressed tar archive.
