Linux Queries Please Help

Hi
I just installed linux (red hat 6.0) yesterday and this is my first contact
with it.
I had success however my Gnome and KDE GUI is playing up. If I click on a
menu it then close it the desktop holds the shape of it. It is the same if I
open a menu or anything in the program half the text is blacked out until I
click on it.
Is this to do with my  Video settings (SIS 6326)????
How do I edit the actual hardware config after initial install????
I also receive a FAILED message on the INITIALIZING ETH0 interface at boot.
What is it???

These problems are stopping what looks like damn good OS
I would really appreciate any help via email or posted here.
