Monitor support in X

Where can I get hold of monitor specifications for a Philips CRT? I've tried
every horiz. sync and vert. refresh  rate I can think of. Philips are not
saying anything and I don't have my documentation. Is there some kind of
autodetect program? If anyone can help I will be very grateful.
