A problem like the one you describe happened to me when I upgraded from
RedHat 5.2 to 6.0. I found out through much hacking, that the module
called parport_probe was what was screwing things up with me. The system
was not really looking at my parallel port, but it thought I was
printing. Try the following:

1. Login as root

2. cd /lib/modules/2.2.5-15/misc

3. mv parport_probe.o parport_probe.o.off  (This renames your
   parport_probe module so the lp daemon doesn't find it and load it.
   You could delete it, but it is better to rename it in case you find
   that you need it later).
