First of all, you did not say anything about your system, error
messages, what distribution you're running, etc.?

If you want help, you've got to explain a little about your situation.
It's not good to use xdm to boot your system straight into X until you
get it setup properly.

As for windows, you never worked on windows because you can't! You have
no idea what is going on behind those windows; about the only thing you
can do is reboot.

Linux is run by a lot of small programs and configured by simple text
file. You have access to all those files, source, howto's, and internet
support. But how can someone help if they dont' even know what your
problem is?

When windows won't boot, you don't know what to do because all you get
is a bunch of hex errors, or a dialog box saying this program has
performed an illegal action and will be shut down (mostly that "program"
is windows itself!).

Linux echo's a lot of error messages to the screen and tells you what is
wrong with your system. Remember that error message or number and goto a
search engine or http://www.deja.com and type it in! Take 1/2 that money
you would have spent on Windows 98 upgrade and buy a good Linux book.
Better yet, save that money and read the online documentation on the
internet or your Linux cd.
