the majority of programs you get your hands on are not RPM files.
Seeing as you are using Mandrake I am guessing you don't even have RPM files as
that stands for Red Hat Package Manager Not Mandrake ... ppl correct me if I am
wrong as I haven't tried linux other than red har and slackware.
Back to your question.. you find a program for linux on the internet odds are
the filename ends in tar or gz or tgz maybe even zip but that last one is rare.
Linux uses a combination of two programs to compress and archive stuff.
Tar and GnuZip.
one puts all the files into one file without compressions and the other
compresses that file. because with this method you are compressing the filenames
and directory structure as well it is a little more efficient that your standard
zip files.
so you download one of these and whack it in your /tmp directory.
then in your /tmp directory un uncompress it and then untar it.
so if its a *.gz file you would go tar -zxvf filename.gz this command will work
for files ending in tgz and gz. and will extract the archive to a directory of
the same name as the origional file with out its extension. if its a tar file
try tar -xvf filename.tar
after this is done simply cd to the new directory and look around there are
files to read such as README and INSTALL that tell you what to do afterthat.
and if you have to compile the program to suit your system there is usually a
script for that purpose such as ./configure and then execute make
you will then have your executable which will have an x in its file attributes.
just type ./ for current directory and then the program name ex ./program
Goodluck with linux I am a new user also.. I have been half heartedly using it
on my ISP for 3 years and now use it on the client end also.. I'm loving it
