Unfortunately, I don't have an solution for this problem. I only have
verification that I too have encountered this problem. Perhaps by
adding my information to yours we can figure out what is going on
here. Here are my observations:

Situation 1:
- linux is the default boot in lilo.conf, which also contains a stanza
for msdos (Win98)
Behavior 1 (no attempt to make selection at LILO prompt):
- boot
- lilo prompt
- Loading linux message
- Block move error 0xAE
- boots successfully anyway

Behavior 2 (attempt to enter linux at LILO prompt):
- boot
- lilo prompt
- type "linux"
- Block move error 0xAE
- lilo prompt (keeps repeating)
- if no entry is made, it will then behave as in Behavior 1

Situation 2:
- msdos (Win98) is the default boot in lilo.conf, which also contains a
stanza for linux

Behavior 1 (no attempt to make selection at LILO prompt):
- boot
- lilo prompt
- msdos boots successfully

Behavior 2 (attempt to enter linux at LILO prompt):
- boot
- lilo prompt
- type "linux"
- Block move error 0xAE
- lilo prompt (keeps repeating)
- if no entry is made, it will then behave as in Behavior 1

To summarize, typing msdos at the LILO prompt always works, whether it
is the default OS or not. Also, waiting for it to boot always works when
it is the default OS. Linux will boot successfully only when it is the
default OS, and even then the "block move" error is displayed. Typing
linux at the LILO prompt always fails.
