Hi...I'm fairly new to Linux myself,but have a solution...one of many,as
I'm sure you'll get responses from all the gurus out there :)

Press ALT-CTRL and plus/minus to change the resolution.
Also,there is a file...I stand to be corrected....its called Xconfigurator
I believe,within it are instructions on how to accomplish various tasks.
The manual pages are also a great source of info...maybe a little
intimidting at 1st,but the more you use them,the more pieces of the puzzle
will slip into shape.IE: man X is a good starting place :)
