Certain -- maybe most -- DOS programs could run on the Linux-based Dos Emulator. But for the most part, Linux will run (and is designed for) programs of the Unix-like flavor, and there is quite a lot of top-notch stuff out there -- CAD, Word Processors, Browsers, compilers, tons of utilities, etc. Corel (who distributes Word Perfect) has even released a version of WP Suite 8 (At least part of to) for Linux, and many other major manufacturers and software houses will probably follow. The whole point is NOT to be compatible with Windows, etc. -- since it's not only quite expensive, but the various Windows platforms aren't too stable, either (and it's not getting better, in case you've tried Win 98!!) You have very little to lose (it certainly costs less than any version of Windows, and will run on significantly less expensive hardware), so why not try it? Good luck!!
