I've installed R.H.5.2, and am now stumped at PPP. I finally got ppp to dial out, using LINUXCONFIG in XWindow's CONTROL PANEL. I first used the button on the "ControlPanel" to dial out, and it worked, but it would not sustain the call. It kept on hanging up, and redialing. I rebooted the machine, and as it was coming back up, it unexpectedly started to dial out. The screen said that "sendmail" was dialing out. It was in a loop, and I couldn't reset it. The dailing loop finally timed out and it went to the login prompt. After logging in, it started to dial again! I went to the X's control panel, and disabled "sendmail". I also removed "sendmail" from the "runlevel" application. I also removed my name and password from the "chat" section of LINUXCONF, hoping that the script would auto jump to the "secrets" section to complete the call, and stay on line. I then did an Emacs to look at the log file. I found that NEWS is in a loop, trying to get the news, and resetting PPP. I also found that the reason that the computer doesn't stay on line is because of "script failure". That doesn't tell me anything!!! Also, now that "sendmail" is disabled, it will NOT dial out anymore. Now that you have some background, can anyone help me resolve my problem?? Must SENDMAIL to be active, to dial out? Is it possible emulate an MS WINDOWS dialin? My isp uses WinNT4.0, and I need to have Linux dial in just like Windows98 does, that would really solve that problem. Besides dialing by using the LINUXCONFIG's dial button, what is the written text command to make ppp dial out in Red Hat? Someone who uses Debian, said that she uses "peon" to activate ppp. I told her I don't peon myself. Anyway, I don't get much chance to do Newsgroups, but I would appreciate it if that knowledgeable person out there would reply to me via my e-mail. It is: Wanderer@workkmail.com. Thanks!
