Help with .tar.gz

I hope someone can help me. I am new to linux and am determined to beat it.
I cant seem to unzip a [ .tar.gz  ] or [ -tar.gz ] file I am doing
(( gzip -d users-guide-1_0_4_tat.gz | tar -xvf-  )) and the only result I
get is that the .gz disappears off the file.
