If we look into the Xclients file whic usually resides in the /etc/X11/xinit
directory we see the lines:

 if [ -f $HOME/.wm_style ] ; then
    WMSTYLE=`cat $HOME/.wm_style`

this looks in the file $HOME/.wm_style file  for your default window
manager.
just edit your .wm_style file and add Mwm or Fvwm etc... on the first line
.. yours is probably blank.
