Your local computer stores probably have Linux CD's for perhaps $20, or you can order most distributions from www.cheapbytes.com for $1.99 (A dollar ninety-nine) plus postage. Linux can run pretty well with 512 megs of disk space. More is naturally better. For a while, I had Win95 and Linux sharing a 1 gig drive half and half. Later I erased Windows, and gave Linux the whole disk. I just didn't need Windows any more. I suggest Slackware, other people like RedHat, Debian seems good. You will probably NOT have to "construct a kernel". Most of these run right out of the box with the things you need. For example, Slackware's default installation gives me Xwindows, Netscape, Apache web server, ftp server, e-mail, all the usual stuff, plus C and C++ compilers. Pascal, Fortran, Pithon, Perl, etc are optional, can be loaded from the CD. Good luck, Irv Mullins
