How to split static partition in Win98

to get the software 1. Downlaod the FIPS tools from www.redhat.com sites, it
is under the dostuils directory. Create a win98 boot disk, put format.exe
fdisk.exe into the diskette. Copy the fips packages to the disk.

2. Buy a Cheapbytes Redhat 5.2 cdrom for RM22. There is a menu base partition
tools in the CD, in the /part directory.
Again, copy the partition software to a bootable diskette, with format.exe and
fdisk.exe inside it.

Before start partition
1. Backup all your important data
2. Be sure your have all your software installation cdrom ready
3. Be prepare the partition will make your win98 unusable
4. Don't call me, or flame me when no 3. happen and you didn't do no 1 and 2
5. There is 1/5 chance that the partition software will smash the windows FAT
partition.

After you have prepare for the above 1. READ the fips documentation. 2. If
you don't want to do step one, just Boot you system using the boot disk I
told you to create. Or press shift-F8 when booting win98 3. At the dos
prompt, go to your A: drive 4. Run fips or the Cheapbytes partition software.
5. Make sure you set enough space for linux if you have a big ego to plays
everything in Linux, e.g. web server, ftp server, squid proxy, gui windows
maker, etc. For big ego, give at least 500MB for linux, 1 GB is fair. For
myself, I give linux 1.5 GB diskspace for my 2.5 GB hd in the company.
Otherwise, 300MB are sufficient (if you have small 1GB hd). If you have huge
hardisk - 3GB and above, give at least 1GB for Linux, you will not regret. 5.
Write the changes 6. Reboot the system. 7. If the paritition manager won't
destroy your partition, congrats, use FDISK/status to check out the new
parittion.

To install (assume you have the Redhat 5.2 cdrom)
1. Boot your win98
2. Go to DOS prompt
3. change to Cdrom drive name
4. go to dosutils directory, run rawrite
5. when prompt the disk images, key in /images/boot.img
6. insert a blank diskette and press enter.
7. Wait

If you are using a new system that support bootable cdrom
1. insert cheapbytes Redhat 5.2 cdrom
2. boot the pc
3. follow the redhat installation instruction to install.
4. press enter-enter-enter.... until you are ask to setup the partition for
linux.
5. you can read the manual to continue or trial and error.
