If you run netcfg from X-Windows (or select the network setup from
control-panel under X) you can setup your ppp (or any network device)
fairly simply.  If you need further details just post.
 
To unzip a gzip'd file (say example.gz), type (from the command prompt)
"gzip -d example.gz"     This will decompress example.gz into example.  

To untar a file (like example.tar) "type tar xvf example.tar" which will
untar

Tar and gzip are generally used together...tar gathers a collection of
files into one uncompressed archive and then is used to compress that
archive.  The file name will look be either example.tgz or
example.tar.gz.  You can either use gzip and then tar (gzip -d example.tgz
gzip -d example.tar) or tar will do gzip for you (type tar xvfz
example.tgz).
