The difference between the various distributions is the packages they
include and the administrative tools they provide. Slackware is
considered to be a more "raw" package where with RedHat a bit of effort
has been put into getting the thing to behave more user-friendly. Some
like the one because of this, others the other.
RedHat uses the newer glibc2 which is to replace libc5, currently being
used by Slackware.
There shouldn't be any piece of software that can be compiled on RedHat
that doesn't work (with very little tweaking) on Slackware or
vice-versa.
