It would be nice if you gave just a wee bit more information. 

If you try to run an app that complians about "Error: can't open Display"
this generally means you are running an application that requires X without
either the DISPLAY environment variable set or no command line switch to find
the display. 

Generally, you want to install X. This should already be installed if you have
applications that require it. If X is set up (the hard bit) you should be
able to start a blank server by typing "X :0.0 &". 
Then you can stick applications on it, e.g. xterm -display :0.0 &
The nice bit is that you can run apps across the network. Your X display
is located at localhost:0.0, or mymachinename:0.0 from elsewhere. 

Read up a bit. The linux users guide by matt welch is a good place to start.
