Had it happen to me once.  The problem was an error in my DNS
configuration.  If you're using DNS on your Linux box, then make sure
it's configured correctly.  Otherwise you'll need to tell sendmail not
to use DNS and ensure you have a valid hostname in /etc/hosts.  In this
case, I'd also set the Dj variable in /etc/sendmail.cf

Unfortunately, I haven't got my sendmail reference with me.
