This is my first attempt at Linux, I had the same problem at first, after
four to five hours of hacking xf86config, and reinstalling, I got it
running 1024 x 768 - 256 colors, I had to read up on my S3 Virge video
card, set it up using the parameters of the card, then setup three different
monitors with the same brand name as my Viewsonic V641, as that monitor was
not listed. I finally was successful setting up as Viewsonic 6 monitor as
that model was one of the listed. As Loic says be sure all the X windows
modules are installed.

Louis.

"Keep hacking, you will either make it or break it."
"Stop hacking, you just died."
