Either you're trying to compile the kernel for a format which your
compiler doesn't support (e.g. compiling an a.out kernel on an ELF
system), or your gcc installation is screwed.

You don't provide any information about what sort of system you have.

Which version of the kernel are you trying to compile?

What version of gcc and binutils are you using?

What did you answer to the question:

  Compile kernel as ELF

when you did `make config'?

Does /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-linux/2.7.2/cc1 exist?
