I'm by no means a Linux guru, but I know modems.  Does the modem handshake;
make tone sounds as it tries to connect to the other server?
If so, you have successfully dialed.  Then does it sound like the modems
stop handshaking, then there's a quiet time, and then it drops?  If so, the
modems connected and did their job, but this scenario would indicate
authentication failure or not being assigned a PPP IP address.  Or do the
modems just drop in the middle of the "handshake"?  Some kind of modem
failure (not likely; modem technology is pretty stable right now).
If you can get some kind of log running, like in Windows, that would be a
great help.  Sorry, I don't know how to do that in Linux.
