Not to be contrary, but when I was running Debian (I've switched to RH7..), I definately downloaded a couple of packages made for Redhat (even packaged in RPM - this was before I learned to compile) and they ran just fine on Debian. I'm a little new to Linux still (a little over year), but not to computers. Why would Debian and Linux have different binary formats? They use the same kernel (so they support ELF binaries), come with (and presumably use) gcc, and offer packages compiled against an i386. Providing they are running on the same architecture, they should be, if not 100%, at least close to that, compatible. In fact, from Debian's website: 3.2 How compatible is Debian with other distributions of Linux? Debian developers communicate with other Linux distribution creators in an effort to maintain binary compatibility across Linux distributions. Most commercial Linux products run as well under Debian as they do on the system upon which they were built. Not trying to be argumentative, just curious...
