I got red hat 7 and I'm trying to learn to use gnome. I can get to
Netscape, I've setup my modem but I cant figure out how to connect to my
server.

There's a couple of different ways to set up a connectio, but i find the
easiest way is to use kppp.
There's a brill nhf at www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/modems/kppp1.html
You'll need to get your local ISP's phone number, dns address and a
username and password (but you can get this from dial-up-networking in
windoze, if you already have a dial up connection)

Kppp is a fine way to fire up your internet connection but if you want a
sure way (shell script) makes life easier when debugging your problems
follow .
from a command promt

all your connection files are located in /etc/ppp
once in there you are going to find a few files missing to create a shell
dialing script
update you locate search database by doing as root (updatedb) wait a few
moments and then do a search for
ppp-on
it should be found at
/usr/local/docs/share/ppp.x.x.x/scripts or somewhere like the (just a
memory blank at the moment)
ok files you need to copy to etc are
ppp-on, ppp-off, ppp-on-dialer. copy them to /etc/ppp

once done you can start to configure you connection
i'm hoping you installed pico a part of (pine) text editor

do "pico ppp-on" here you will find your connection settings change the user
passwd etc
and then at the bottom you'll see a script
it will call a dev called /dev/ttyS0 9600 \
ok change that to
/dev/modem 115200 \

and save the file crtl-x :)
now we edit ppp-on-dialer
all we have to do here is to remove the last to lines or strings (whatever
you'd like to call them)

this is so that PAP can auth by itself
 so do

# ogin:--ogin: $ACCOUNT \
# assword: $PASSWORD

or just remove those last to lines
and change the timeout from 30 to 60sec's this just gives PAP time to auth
on slower connections.
then save

ok now for the PAP-SECRETS file the format is as follows

(username) ppp0 (password) with TAB spaces in between

ok save that

the options file is as such

user (TAB) (username)
then save

ok now to create a link to the modem in the /dev directory do the following

ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/modem

or ttyS1
then we test the script with
/etc/ppp/ppp-on

make sure you have set the permissions correctly eg chmod 700 (to all of the
above files) this is to set them to root access only)
now watch you script dial with
tail -f /var/log/messages

i hope this helps a little Good Luck !!
