using redhat 7.0, though this might not matter much due to the nature of my question. I have two network cards both with static ip address for a private network. both were configured using /sbin/ifconfig. using ifconfig i set the ip adderss, netmask, and broadcast and both interfaces work just fine. my question is, is there a way to set one of the interfaces to respond as a dhcp client via command line using ifconfig? the goal here is to connect one of the interfaces to receive an ip address via a cable modem. thankyou.

You can use Dhcp client daemon to ask for an ip address. Just type: dhcpcd This will set the ip address of eth0 through dhcp. You can specify the networkcard with 'eth0', 'eth1' as parameters. (look at the manpages: man dhcpcd) "DEVILUS GRAY" <dvgray@a.net> wrote in message news:kG286.1185$mo2.87837@news1.news.adelphia.net... > using redhat 7.0, though this might not matter much due to the nature of my > question. > I have two network cards both with static ip address for a private network. > both were configured using /sbin/ifconfig. > > using ifconfig i set the ip adderss, netmask, and broadcast and both > interfaces work just fine. > > my question is, is there a way to set one of the interfaces to respond as a > dhcp client via command line using ifconfig? > > the goal here is to connect one of the interfaces to receive an ip address > via a cable modem. > > thankyou. > >

Setting up a dchp IP address is a lot simpler than it sounds. RedHat 7.0 has linuxconfig built in, so type linuxconf at the command line and select dhcp (don't use any IP or netmask for this card), specify your nic card, and any irq info you may have. If your using Gnome or KDE, you'll get a gui for this which is simpler to use because you get drop down windows. Make sure you know what the IP of your modem or dhcp server is and use it as your default gateway. Add some DNS servers and reboot. Your now up and running!
