Many of the newer ones will automatically do this for you. For instance I recently set up a win98/mandrake7.1 dual boot. Windows was already on the puter. I started the mandrake cd and chose linux fo windows, this partioned my harddrive and installed linux without touching the windows data. Everything seems to work fine. I'm happy. --------------87525994574670244614907F Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-15 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
c17 wrote:
Is there any good partition freeware that will allow me to repartition my
hardrive, and install Linux, without destroying my current version of
windows and my data,
Depends on which veersion of linux you have. there is a good partition program, its called fips, and it comes with your linux CD as a standard. how to activate it : 1) under windows you defrag the hard drive - ( so in case you have 10% used but its so fragmanted its at the near end of the drive you wont have it deleted or run over ) 2) you create a boot disk with the fips software on it ( best to create another rescue disk ). 3) you boot your computer with fips 4) you activate fips from the boot cd 5) you choose the size of the first partition and the size of the second one the first contains the data you already have, the second the data you plan to put on. so its important the first one be made by yoou more than enough to contain your data. 6) save the data and reboot 7) Important!!! put the rescue disk inside before you let windows work its magic again, and choose drive fix, ( scandisk, fdisk, norton disk doctor ) whatever out of the boot disk. 8) when it announces it finished all fixes ( and it will report problems to fix, be sure ofthat ) reboot and let windows finally take over. final notes: 1) if you dont do step 8+7, you will get all sorts of wierd data and computer configuration, because the data is only half complete 2) fips has an undo utility 3) if you have fat32 its important to use ONLY fips 2.0+ 4) I have used this system and it worked perfectly on my pc. so i hope i helped and good luck, and if you dont wanna use fips thats ok too, but its non destructive and its great, i am a happy user On Fri, 22 Dec 2000, Dave M. wrote: > c17 wrote: > > > Is there any good partition freeware that will allow me to repartition my > > hardrive, and install Linux, without destroying my current version of > > windows and my data, > > Depends on which veersion of linux you have. If you have any recent Linux distribution (such as RedHat Linux >5.0, Suse >4.0, Mandrake >4.0, Debian >3.0) then you dont need to worry about this, their installer have a partition software to do that, but anyway remember to first defragment the partition where you have win9x
