OK, here is the deal. we are a small manufacturing company running
Windows NT on our main server using 10/100 to connect about 20 seats
on our office network. We are looking to utilize our older DOS
machines (some 386 and 486) in the plant for the simple task of
viewing Job Tickets, Spec Sheets, etc. which will be in simple HTML.
We recently set up a Linux RedHat server that we want to use to handle
the machines in the plant which will pretty much just handle the HTML
pages over a 10baseT connection via a 24port Kingston hub. This is my
basic understanding of what I we are looking at accomplishing and
since we are slow right now I have been pulled off my job to try to
work on this..

Here are the simple questions and hopefully someone out there can give
me simple answers. I am not very good with networks (although my boss
is our MIS coordinator and would understand what I don't but this is
his first Linux exp) so try to make it simple to understand if you are
inclined to help.

1)HOW do we go about getting the DOS machines (all also have Win 3.1
and IE3.x) to communicate with the Linux server? From what we have
been told we can use TCP/IP but another option my boss wondered about
was to have the Linux server emulate a Novell server (all the older
machines have nic's and drivers to run on a Novell 3.51 net IIRC) and
have it go that route.

2)He is wondering about any problems with the 10baseT and the 10/100
on our NT network since the Linux server will need to get info from
the NT server and was wondering if the 10baseT would drag down the
10/100 connection to a lower category or if NT would just KNOW what it
should be sent at. He was also thinking maybe we woudl need to use 2
nic's in the Linux box and exxentially use it as a router.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can either reply here or to me directly at ellegon@iserv.net as
well.

Also, fair warning, although I won't cross post this as such, I will
post it to a handful of other Linux groups so please ignore it if you
see it again in another NG:-)

Thanks a ton in advance:-)

Hi Todd

Im not a Linux guru by any means...however i have been running it for a while and
know that it is highly versatile.
The only suggestion I can make is to read up on Samba
http://www.it.redhat.com/support/docs/tips/Samba-Tips/Samba-Tips.html
go to http://www.redhat.com/ and do a search for Samba on both redhat and linux sites
this is the best i can do but samba is where you need to start
good luck
let me know how you get on
