i had a similar problem. A little more complicated: I had a machine, It was
over clocked with an onboard video card. It got hot in the room and locked
up, I rebooted and the machine never came back up. It had a netgear fast
ethernet.

I got a new mother board with on-board everything (the cheapest I could find)
It has an on-board SIS900 ethernet card. So I just replaced the mother board
and booted up. Linux found that the old netgear was gone, and unloaded it's
drivers, then detected the new card and loaded drivers for it, up and running
no problem.

Then I reinstalled the system to get Samba. But the ethernet card got
'lost.' After much work I found that by making sure I installed the servers
(any networking option should work) I could get the kernel setup to receive a
NIC. Then I tried removing the netgear, and disabling the network card
on-board, rebooting then I shut down the computer again. I re-enabled the
on-board NIC and when the system booted i stopped it at LILO...
boot:

this prompt is your special helper, to help guide linux's PNP or auto detect
features you can enter this at the prompt:

boot:linux ether=0,0,eth0

the first 0 is the auto probe command, if you know the IRQ you can replace the
0 with that number, the second 0 is the auto probe command for the base
address (remember setting these for sound cards in early dos programs and
windows?) the second number is the device designation. if you have more than
one card you can name them differently to help in setting up their IPs and
other networking functions.

You will need to set up your host name, DNS, IP etc. by hand here if you have
been using the install GUI you may need more help finding all the files to
update once the ethernet card is brought up. (You will see the boot up
loading the device ethX and it will show pass or fail.) Good luck.
