Linux as a Server??

Hello all,

I am thinking about setting up my own web server and I'm
wondering if anyone has experience running Linux in that
type of environment. All I would be using this computer and
Linux for would be a server. Any tips, suggestions, horror
stories, feedback of any kind would be greatly appreciated.
Also, what version of Linux would be best in this
situation??

Thanks in advance for your patience and help!

Well, as long as you just want static .html pages, its really
easy. SuSE Linux 7.0 (and I assume any other decent Linux distro)
comes with an Apache web server. (www.apache.org, www.suse.com)
With SuSE, everything you have to do is install the packet
(which is done by default I think) and copy your webpage to
/usr/local/httpd/htdocs and you have your server. CGI scripts
should be pretty simple, too, but I never tried it.

Depending on the environment that you want to put the server into
(LAN/Internet/..) you might have to take a number of security
measures. It's always a good idea to kick out all the services
listed in /etc/inetd.conf, or at least most of them. this file
exists in every version of Linux. Nobody needs all these
services, and they are just possible weak points in your server.
Also, read the documentation that comes with your Linux. If you
get a distro that comes with a good documentation, this might
already answer all your questions.
