I am a beginner in Linux..
I have installed Redhat linux 6.2 into my newly assembled PC.I am unable to
telnet to the linux box.Eventhough I am able to telnet out from that linux
box.I am getting a reply from pinging to the linux host. The message I get
when I try telnet is "Connection refused by host"
When I try ssh I get "TCP ?IP error"
I have verified with ps command that telnet is running in the linux box.
Surprisingly when I run tcpdchk I get the message, inetd.conf and tlid.conf
are not present.
Does it mean that I have to install the Telnet package separately???
What could be the problem?
Tom

I'm no expert either Thomas, but as long as you installed all of the packages on installation for telnetting it should be automatic. I installed all of the packages because I have plenty of room, and I went ahead and set up the apache web server. My first time telnetting in from outside was easy. I didn't have to edit any of the system files. Maybe you could try telnet://localhost telnet://127.0.0.1 and telnet://'your ip address' After installing the telnet packages on the initial install, everything else should be automatic with the RH6.2 distro justin Thomas K Jacob <thomasj@cs.uidaho.edu> wrote in message news:8qtpdl$tqi$1@kestrel.csrv.uidaho.edu... > I am a beginner in Linux.. > I have installed Redhat linux 6.2 into my newly assembled PC.I am unable to > telnet to the linux box.Eventhough I am able to telnet out from that linux > box.I am getting a reply from pinging to the linux host.
