Initialization modem problem

Greetings to the group!

I have installed a U.S. Robotics Performance Pro Modem, which the
manufacturer indicates is Linux-compatible. When I try to make a
connection, system tells me that modem is ready, but stalls when
initializing modem. Log window only says "Expecting O.K." When I click on
the "Query Modem" button I am told that modem is ready, but the Modem Query
Results yields no information at all. I know the initialization string for
the modem, but the results are the same no matter what I type, even if I
leave initialization string blank. This is supposed to be a hard modem, but
will not accept "CRTSCTS". Any suggestions? I'm running Mandrake 7.1.
Thanks in advance.

selected the correct port, and it will then naturally enough not respond to
your query. Don't assume that because you get this message that your device
is correctly configured. Trial and error with different dev/ports is the
only method I know of. Only an expected response from a modem query is
verification that you are setup correctly.

Thanks, Maddoctor, for your response. I have since learned that the
modem I have will not work with any Linux below 2.3, which appears to be the
problem. I am getting Red Hat 6.2, which is supposed to be compatible.
