A simple solution needed....

Hi!

I have two computers, one is 486 DX8, 16MB RAM, 1.2GB H.D running Windows
'95 and Red Hat Linux 6.2 in dual boot, the other one is Pentium III 450Mhz,
64MB RAM, 8GB + 4GB H.D running Windows '95. both computers have a NE2000
compatible (called "Edimax") netcard, the older one has an ISA netcard, and
the new one has a PCI card.

I tried to connect them using a crosslinked UTP cable, installed the
correct driver under Windows '95 in both computers, installed TCP/IP
protocol and defined an IP address(192.168.1.1 / 2) and a subnet mask
(255.255.0.0) for both of them, and under Windows '95 they comunicate fine.

Under Linux, I installed a driver (what's called a module) by the guidance
of someone from here... he instructed me to run through all the modules
using the modprobe command until I don't get an error message, so that what
I did, I found that a module called 82596 isn't causing any error messages
(does that mean it is the right one?), so I defined the same IP address and
subnet mask as I defined under Windows '95 using the ifconfig command, and
brought the eth0 interface up, and tried to ping the Windows '95 computer
and ... it didn't work, I tried to ping the Linux computer from the
Windows '95 and it didn't work too...

Don't give them the same IP/subnet-addresses!
About the Linux-thing I don't know about... But your PC's should have
different addresses, else it is looking for itself!

i dont know why you are using such a netmask, but it really shouldnt
matter. a few things could be wrong. Make sure the ip addresses for both
computers are in the same subnet. ie: 255.255.0.0 means just the first 2
numbers have to be alike. as in 192.168.*.* I have a feeling you may have
the wrong nic driver. try to run /sbin/ifconfig -a and see if you get
errors on the eth0 interface. If no packets are being transmitted, then you
have done something wrong. If they are being transmitted, something is
misconfigured on one of your computers.

good luck
