I am new to redhat (or linux for that matter). I am currently running
my isa usr 28.8 modem but realy want to run at 56k. My understanding is
that linux will not accept a "win" style modem, only hard ware based.
Is there a "program" out there that will allow a cheap win modem to run
under linux?

No there is not any that I know of. Find a 56k ISA internal modem, most of
theese are hardware modems. Or an external modem. The following link has
been posted on this board before it lists hundred of modems and if there
compatible with Linux.

It would be almost impossible to get a winmodem to work under linux, since
there is no standard way to talk to them.
Unless it says it works with linux, almost no PCI modems work. Only ISA
modems that don't say "winmodem" "software modem" "HCF modem" or anything
else to that extent will work, but don't expect them to say that they will
work for linux. Any external modem will work except for "US Robotics
Winmodem" again, don't expect them to say that they will work for linux.
When you buy a modem make sure you can return it, just in case.

PS
I have a "Diamond Supra Express 56k" external. I am very happy with it, it
is fast, I had no problems with set up, and it works with windoze well too.
The catch? It's almost $90.

Sorry the link did not appear. Here it is!
This site explains why WINmodems won't work with linux, and lists hundreds
of models and if their compatible.
