[and > > how?]................ > > Please help :-(( Hi, one way to do this is the following: We will use nt's bootmanager 1. first you should have boot disks -with the program fdisk- for every OS on your puter so you will still be able to access your harddrive if something unexpectedly goes horribly wrong :-( 2. reinstall your Linux bootmanager - probably lilo - to the partition where Linux is installed. Most likely it is now installed in your Master Boot Record ( /dev/hda or the MBR of c:\ in a win9x environment ). Reinstallation is accomplished by editing lilo.conf and running lilo. Tell lilo to install in Linux' root partition ( *not /dev/hda* but for instance /dev/hda2, find out!, use linux fdisk ) by editing the line in lilo.conf with boot in it: boot=/dev/hda2 in this example 3. for security, tell it to make a backup of the soon to be old bootsector backup=/boot/boot.hda2.currentdate 4. remove the lines considering the other OS from lilo.conf ( win9x ) You can still use a selection of your own kernels if you desire to do so 5. close the editor you used to edit lilo.conf maybe I elaborate too much, but it would be a shame if anything failed 6. make a backup of your current MBR using the dd-command and remember where you put it /bin/dd if=/dev/hda2 bs=512 count=1 of=/boot/boot.hda.currentdate Only the hda2 and the /boot/boot.hda.currentdate part of the previous line may be changed!! the rest should be exactly like this!! 7. check whether /boot/boot.hda.currentdate is 512 bytes in size 8. run /sbin/lilo, this will effectuate the changes in lilo.conf It will probably complain about being installed on a logical partition and it rightly does but in order for anything to work, just ignore it and continue. 9. now copy the current bootsector of LILO to a place where nt will be able to find it /bin/dd if=/dev/hda2 bs=512 count=1 of=/mnt/hda/bootsec.lin Remember I use hda2 as an example, use your Linux's native partition instead ( where / is at ). If you use scsi-disks for example every hda changes to sda 10. reboot using a win9x boot flop Reinstall the bootsector the way win9x sees it with the command fdisk /mbr btw: there should a file on c: named bootsec.lin with a size of 512 bytes :-) 11. do another reboot without the floppy, win9x should start without problems, Linux doesn't even seem to exist 12. install nt - do'nt touch the linux partition!! some OS are pretty ignorant or at least pretend to be |-( 13. edit boot.ini, at the end add a line c:\bootsec.lin="Linux" maybe you have to adjust boot.ini attributes first 14. if everything went ok at the next boot there should be an entry for Linux in nt's boot manager!!! greetz Jeroen
