Hey, I don't know much aout Linux but someone told me that i can make a router out of my old 486 and use it around my network for connecting to the outsidew world. Has anyone heard of the Linux Router Project? (LRP) I have seen some sites but don't know where to start. Any insight? Thanks,

http://www.linuxrouter.org Its a fairly simple, easy to implement router/firewalling solution, that can run on a single floppy. More than likely you will discover that a 1.44mb floppy is not large enough, and learn how to format 1.68mb floppies :) You can build your LRP through windows, dos, or Linux, so don't worry about having Linux boxes around to make it work right. Though, it is easier. The advantage of LRP is that you can write protect the floppy, so if anyone hacks your firewall/router, you can just reboot and change your password, with no worries. I used it for a while (2.9.4) until we opted to build a redhat 6.0 box to replace it. We needed to have ipchains, ipmasqadm, a pppoe client, pppd, and some other items for logging and reporting, which started to become difficult to cram into a single floppy. The particular 486 we are using doesn't like specially formatted floppies, and replacing the system board is not an option (its a 486PC, but part of an old Networth 6000 network switch) Hope that helps.
