Hi all..

I cannot log in to linux... I get to a "Pingu" picture & it just sits there
looking stupid!!! I have tried nearly every way I can think of to get into
the OS... (I even read the manual) no luck... why the hell are there so many
passwords anyway??? stupid if you ask me... I am typing the corect password
before some says... lol

the other point is some clever sod should enable the "ESC" key throughout
the instalation!! that is a major pain... then again if you cannot log in
cos it tels you off for not mounting or unmounting the drive when you
reboot...

Hi, I bet you didn't read your manual properly or follow the instalation
instructions to the letter, but not to worry it has happend to thousands
of us before you, I suggest you read your manual and reinstall and pay
particular attention to any mention of a password and write down your
entry so you don't forget it, and remember that Linux is case sensitve.

Why not boot into linux single mode, then change the root password.
Re-installing is the windows way to do things.

Most Win9x (or soon to be X-Win9x users) probaly do not know how to
boot into single mode. In my opinion you are definitely accurate when
you say, "Re-installing is the windows way to do things" however, for
a linux newbie this may be a good idea. In other words the more a
newbie installs linux the more they learn about some of the basics of
linux. (There are not necessarily many places around that teach linux
affordably). I know I became an expert at installing linux! :o) It
was a transition from windows to linux. BTW, I dont' know how to
boot linux into "single mode". I'm sure I'll learn someday.
Linux ain't easy! But, it is definately worth the effort so far!

I think Microsoft should be somewhat admired for its maximizing the
capitalist approach to life. But, I don't like buggy or incomplete
software that is 'closed source' and I have to pay for it!

Linux has a future. Let's keep it going. Please.

Before telling you that, you need to know that linux provides several
runlevels. (Check information in /etc/inittab). Runlevel 3 is the full
multiuser mode and runlevel 5 is the X11 mode. Single user mode is runlevel
1 and mounts ONLY the root file system. It can be used for many things.

To boot up in single user mode, at the lilo prompt, you can type linux
single or linux init=/bin/bash.

=> you say, "Re-installing is the windows way to do things" however, for

Reinstall is not a very nice idea until you have screwed up the
installation.

At least it tells you that it is in the process of mounting/unmounting file
systems. Windows does not do that. Just stands there and gives a blank stare
at your face. You do not even know what is happening and if something goes
wrong, where it went wrong.
