Which Linux OS ???

I want to try out the Linux OS, But I have found that there are a least 6
different versions on the shelf at Circuit City. Which one should I buy? Is
this like a trial and error thing .......
As of now I'm running win98 on a P2, 450mhz.
When I figure this out I will be installing Linux on the same hard drive as
win98. Which brings up another situation. I do not have a program to break
this up into partitions. So does Linux do this for me???

Thanks, Scott

Hi,

AFAIK Linux doesn't partition the HD, you have to do it before installing
the OS. I myself partitioned the disk with Partition Magic (there may be
issues if you have a HD > 8GB, but Partition Magic version 4, I think,
ought ot take care of that, too). Partition Magic is _not_ freeware, you
have to buy it, but I've noticed recently (here in UK) that Caldera
released their version of Linux together with Partition Magic; so perhaps
Caldera could be a possible choice for you.

Cheers,

ln

BTW, I'm not affiliated with either Partition Magic or with Caldera
(besides, I'm using Red Hat).
Use FIPS!!!!

Hi :

Don't need to buy partition magic. Most of the versions of Linux comes
bundled
with an utility called "FIPS.EXE" in the DOSUTILS directory. Use that to
partition u r
HD. You may have to clean up u r HD though before using FIPS. Defrag the
HD and use FIPS.

Cheers

Try Redhat Linux. I have used two other versions (SuSe and Debian) but enjoy
Rhl the most.

It allows you to do it for yourself. Linux is all about being able to do
things oneself.
