The hostname command changes the hostname but it doesn't save the name (to my knowledge, but I haven't read the man page in a while). Marc.

This topic/thread has been discussed umteen times on different linux groups, try google and read them, you will then see "all" the comments made by different contibutors for yourself then you will see that you are wrong. -- Regards Richard pa3gcu@zeelandnet.nl http://people.zeelandnet.nl/pa3gcu/

Which computer name? There are at least three different names you might be
referring to:
1) The name that hostname(1) / gethostname(2) / sethostname(2) manipulate,
2) The DNS resolver(3) name associated with one or more of your IP addresses
(including the name associated to 127.0.0.1), or
3) The name used by samba(7) as the SMB computername
Where (and with what utilities) each of these are set is dependant on how you
have the various system utilities set up, and that is a great deal dependant
on which Linux distribution you are running. You're going to have to be
clearer in explaining what you want, and what you've got.
