I have been trying to set up linux in a box with a p100/32mb which will dial
the ISP and handle mail and IP connections for a network of 5 pc's at our
school.

we need local mail pc to pc and mail collected from the isp.

each pc may access the net from time to time.

we had a command line system running using debian which constantly dialled
up as soon as the system disconnected.

we tried every kind of configuration to no avail.

so we decided to try again using mandrake because we had the cd's

we don't seem to have enough grunt to run mandrake

so can someone recommend which distribution we can use which will work,
enable us to run mail and connection sharing, and can live with the p100
32mb. [there is room to put dram in but no $'s to buy it!]

or do we have to go to build from basic kernel.

email replies direct to robert@pnn.org.nz as well as the newsgroup
appreciated.

if this is the wrong place to post my apologies.

You should have been able to get this system working. I have a similar
setup on a p120/64mb. Well at least I used to, now I have DSL. I would
download a 2.4 kernel. You will probably need to recompile the kernel to
get all the options for ip forwarding and masquerading. Once you do that,
just apt-get install ipmasq and it will work. ipmasq does all the work for
you as long as you have a properly configured kernel.

Debian. This time, when you run pppconfig select "Demand" and not
"Persist". Email me if you need help. I'm the author of pppconfig.

There are a couple of ways you can go here. One, try to get someone locally
knowledgable about Debain to keep your first set up. That would be ideal.
If you can't do that, I see two options. One, use one of the new small
distros for old hardware, like Gentoo Linux. The problem with that is that
such distros are source only. You have to download and compile them
yourself. Your other option is to get an older version of a diistro.
The upside to this is that lots of used and discount bookstores have older
LInux books with an older distro included. Plus, the book is nice. The
catch here is that you'll have to be vigilant about patching old security
holes. At least they're well documented by now. Also, be advised that the
companies wont give support for very old distros. If you're wanting to go
the graphical route, I'd say use Caldera 2.2 .

Good Luck,
